Last year, I lost about 25,000yen (about $250) in Roppongi. I had the bills in my pocket with my mobile phone, a rare case, and I was watching closely as I knew that the bills could fall if I was to pick up the phone. My mobile rang and I lost the money. Not in a wallet, and in Roppongi, probably the last place in Tokyo one would want to lose money in.
Well, I thought I'd see if all those rumours about Japan were true and I went to the local Police office and registered my lost money. 30mins later a Japanese man had returned it, and I could go and pick it up whenever. Only in Japan! Well, by law, the man could claim from 5 to 20% of the sum and after having declined to claim any of it, he changed his mind, called me again and the deal was arranged for the maximum he was untitled to. Still I was happy.
Today the New York Times runs an article on it: Never Lost, but Found Daily: Japanese Honesty.
